Ranger Pro Matt Arey Wins FLW Tour Event on Beaver Lake

North Carolina native mounts comeback to capture $125,000 first-place prize

(April 28, 2015) Ranger Pro Matt Arey loves Beaver Lake and will quickly tell anyone that it's his favorite fishery in the country. And after weighing in a four-day total of 55 pounds, 6 ounces last weekend to win the FLW Tour event on the Arkansas impoundment, what's not to love?

On Sunday, Arey, of Shelby, N.C., made it back-to-back wins on Beaver Lake, giving him the second Tour-level event of his young career. The outfitter-turned-professional angler won on the lake in 2014, making him one of just three professional anglers with a pair of Tour-level wins on Beaver Lake. With the win, punctuated by a tournament-best final-day limit of 17 pounds, 13 ounces, Arey took home $125,000 and vaulted to into eighth place in the Angler of the Year standings.

"I love Beaver Lake, I really do," Arey said. "No, it doesn't have the biggest fish in the world in it, but it's an awesome pattern lake with an incredible amount of diversity. It suits the way I like to fish, hopping around trying to get something going, looking for little windows and patterns that might only last a day or just a few hours - then it completely changes the next day."

Arey brought five-fish limits to the weigh-in stand on each of the tournament's four days to win the event by a commanding 5 pounds, 10 ounces, besting a Top-10 field that included six Ranger Pros. Arey's big payday included the $100,000 first-place prize from FLW Outdoors as well as the $25,000 Ranger Cup bonus.

"Running a Ranger is such an advantage when it comes to fishing tournaments," Arey said. "Not only does my 520C give me a competitive edge when it comes to fishability and performance, but the Ranger Cup bonus is such a strong incentive. I made an extra $25,000 this week for running the best boat on the water."

The Wal-Mart FLW Tour resumes May 14-17 on Alabama's Lake Eufaula for the fourth stop on the 2015 schedule.

"The Beaver Lake event is special for us because it's close to home and a great opportunity each year for our employees to see an FLW event up close," said Ranger Boats Vice President of Marketing Bart Schad. "So when a Ranger angler like Matt is able to bring home the win, it's even sweeter. And to do it two years in a row on a notoriously tough fishery is such an accomplishment. We couldn't be prouder."
